Review written by: Griffyn, RavenCon 2010 Restaurant Liasion
Apollo's Flame Baked Pizza and Grill is a bit of an oddity, but in a good way generally. From the outside, and from the menu items, one would expect a nice, upscale family italian restaurant with hostess seating, but upon walking in the door you find an order counter with a large menu posted above it fast-food style. The person at the register asks if it's for here or to go and then proceeds to ask for your order, again in fast food style. After placing the order (there are real restaurant menus and a row of chairs if you'd like to think about it first) you are handed a table number and left to find a place to sit.
The food is delivered quickly (although you get your own drinks from the fountain) and once again the mid- to high-end family italian feel comes back. From their Chicken Parmesan which stays crispy even under sauce and cheese to the refreshing simplicity and delicate flavors in the Ravioli Romana, except for the paper cups you could easily forget that they also turn out subs and slices to go. Don't get me wrong now, the food is far from 5-star. But it is on par with what you would expect for the prices and the decor. Perhaps even a bit better than most.
The real news is that they have recently begun delivery from 11am to 10pm with a $15 minimum. And speaking of pizza delivery, their hand-tossed pizza is, like all of their baked dishes, prepared in an open-flame brick oven set right out front to display for the patrons. When $15 to $25 will get you a 20" gourmet brick-oven pizza delivered to the hotel, plus the opportunity to throw fried ravioli, jalapeno bites, breaded mushrooms or even cajun fries and onion straws in on the order (or even linguini mattuccio), it is easy to pick which pizza guy to call. And if you decide to get a large Calzone or Stromboli, just make sure you have some hungry friends standing by. Or better yet call me, I'll be glad to help.
