Amy H. Sturgis earned her Ph.D. in Intellectual History from Vanderbilt University and teaches Interdisciplinary Studies at Belmont University. In the field of Native American studies and politics she has published four books and numerous articles on subjects from colonial history to current U.S. policy. In the field of science fiction/fantasy studies, she has another four books to her credit, as well as multiple book chapters and articles on subjects such as J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Gothic literature, and Arthurian legends, among others. Her most recent book project focuses on the intersection of fantasy literature and Native America.
Sturgis is a regular speaker at universities and genre conventions across the U.S. and Canada, and she is often interviewed by national radio programs, television shows, and newspapers as a scholarly expert. She contributes a regular feature on the history of genre literature to the popular U.K.-based podcast StarShipSofa and serves on the Advisory Board of Mythopoeic Press.
In 2006, Sturgis was honored with the Imperishable Flame Award for Achievement in Tolkien/Inklings Scholarship. Sturgis recently won the 2009 Sofanaut Award for her regular "History of the SF Genre" segments on the UK-based StarShipSofa podcast
